What Does Depression Feel Like?

People describe depression as more than just feeling sad. You may feel numb, unmotivated, and disconnected from yourself and the people around you. The things you once used to enjoy may not give you the same uplifting feeling, and you may want to isolate yourself, feeling like a burden, or like nobody understands you.
When you feel stuck in this place, even small steps forward can feel impossible. This is where counselling can make a difference.

How Can Counselling Help Depression?

Counselling offers the opportunity to explore your feelings and begin understanding yourself better. Most counsellors can’t diagnose you or prescribe medications – our role is to simply offer you a space to talk and heal.
Here’s how therapy can support you:

  1. A Safe, Non‑Judgmental Space

The role of a counsellor is to truly listen and witness you for who you are, offering a neutral, compassionate perspective. Being able to talk openly and feeling seen and heard can already make a difference in your mood and self-esteem.

  2. Understanding the Root Causes

Together, you’ll explore what may contribute to your feelings. Our current understanding of depression tells us that it’s multifactorial – it’s not just a shift in your brain chemistry, it’s a result of your past experiences, traumas, life’s challenges and stress.

  3. Learning New Coping Strategies

Evidence-based approaches such as CBT, compassion-focused therapy, and mindfulness can help shift negative patterns and build healthier ways to cope. I believe therapy needs to be tailored to you and your unique, individual story and needs.

  4. Reconnecting with Hope

Counselling helps you rediscover meaning, purpose, and motivation—one step at a time. Together with your therapist, you can set small goals and steps to achieve them, re-building trust and confidence in yourself.

You Deserve Support and Healing

Depression is not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign you’ve been carrying too much for too long. Asking for support from your family, friends, and healthcare professionals, is an important step – often the hardest! – to lessen that burden.

It’s possible for you to feel more hopeful, more connected, and more like yourself again. All you need to do is reach out and ask for help.
