Frequently Asked Questions

What is integrative counselling?

Integrative Counselling is an approach to therapy that integrates different styles, rather than relying on one single approach. I blend elements of different therapy modalities like person-centred, psychodynamic, CBT, mindfulness and somatic therapy, depending on what’s best for the individual person. Integrative therapy is tailored to your needs, rather than a one-size fits all approach.

Integrative counselling uses techniques from different types of therapy to create a flexible, while-person approach that is tailored to your specific needs, rather than using a single school of therapy.

Yes, integrative counselling is suitable and appropriate for trauma and PTSD. By integrating different therapy modalities like CBT, mindfulness and body-focused techniques, it can help you understand how your body and mind have adapted to trauma, while finding your own unique way to process the traumatic events.

Your first session is a chance for you and your therapist to get to know each other. It allows your therapist to collect information about you and help you understand the process of therapy. You will have the opportunity to explore what brings you to therapy and ask any questions you may have. There is no right or wrong way to approach your first session.

It depends on your specific case. I offer open-ended therapy, which means I don’t assign a specific number of sessions, but I work with your needs and goals. In general, short-term sessions (1-6) are recommended for specific issues that require immediate coping tools, like work stress or some life transitions. More complex issues like anxiety, depression, trauma and long-standing mental health issues, require a longer commitment (10+ sessions). The sessions may be frequent initially, on a weekly basis, and can be reduced to fortnightly or monthly as you feel you are able to cope better on your own.

Absolutely. Counsellors have a duty of confidentiality, which means everything you say in the room stays confidential. The only exceptions are if you disclose something that puts you or others at risk of harm, or if it’s required by the law such as in a court case.

Yes. The blend of different modalities can help you find your own way to deal with anxiety and depression.

Yes. I offer online sessions as well as in person and walk-and-talk. You choose what works best for you.

The answer to that is different for everyone. Common reasons to start counselling are feeling overwhelmed, stuck or struggling to cope with emotions and daily life on your own. Having a safe, non-judgemental space to talk can offer you support in times of need.

An integrative counsellor usually holds a professional diploma, degree (BA/Bsc) or postgraduate qualification (MA/PgDip), alongside supervised clinical hours and registration with a professional body like BACP, NCPS or UKCP. I currently hold a professional diploma and I am completing a Masters degree, and I am registered with BACP and NCPS.
